Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin announced today that running back DeAngelo Williams will not play in tomorrow night’s AFC Wild Card Game against the Cincinnati Bengals due to a foot injury suffered in the regular season finale against the Cleveland Browns.
Tomlin’s announcement was posted to Twitter by Steelers PR spokesman Burt Lauten.
Pittsburgh is still favored by three-points in the road game, as the Bengals will likely start A.J. McCarron at quarterback while Andy Dalton continues to recover from a thumb injury, but losing Williams is a big hit to the running game.
Former Michigan running back Fitzgerald Toussaint will likely draw the start in Williams’ place, but had just 24 yards on 12 carries against Cleveland last weekend.
Against a dangerous Bengals defense, that production isn’t going to be acceptable.
Williams proved to still have a lot in the tank this season, rushing for 907 yards and 11 touchdowns after feature back Le’Veon Bell tore his MCL. That said, unless Toussaint has a monster game or if quarterback Ben Roethlisberger just rips Cincinnati’s defense with the help of Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant and others, the Steelers will have an uphill battle heading into Paul Brown Stadium.
