Jeff Long steps down as CFB Playoff committee chairman

Jeff Long is stepping down from his role as chairman of the College Football Playoff selection committee, according to multiple reports. Long served in that position for two seasons and will remain on the committee with two years left on his current term.

College Football Playoff executive director Bill Hancock confirmed that Long was indeed stepping down, and also commended the job he did.

“Jeff was a terrific chairman,” Hancock said. “He was the perfect choice to be the first chairman. He was a very effective leader inside the committee room and also an honest communicator outside it.”

And what a job Long did, sometimes showing flawed and conflicted reasoning for the committee’s selections while also trying to run an ever-evolving and imperfect system. There’s still work to be done regarding the playoff and its selection process, but there’s no doubt that he has laid the groundwork for a great thing and his name will go down in history for doing just that.
