Unranked Wisconsin upsets Michigan State on late layup

The unranked Wisconsin Badgers pulled off a key signature win against Michigan State when Ethan Happ’s layup with 12 seconds remaining gave the team a 77-76 win in Madison.

Now, under normal circumstances, there would be a statistical breakdown over just how Wisconsin pulled off the win, Michigan State didn’t have it, etc. Except, these circumstances aren’t normal.

Simply put, the No. 4 Spartans beat themselves today after matching Wisconsin in nearly every major stat except for rebounding, where Michigan State had a 35-25 advantage. Looking at the video, one can see that coach Tom Izzo had multiple timeouts remaining following Happ’s go-ahead layup. What he should have done was call one immediately to draw up a play that could potentially help Michigan State win the game.

Instead, he let time elapse, and now the Spartans have fallen to 3-3 in Big Ten play.

Wisconsin next takes on Penn State in State College on Thursday, while Michigan State hosts Nebraska on Wednesday.
