Alabama LB Keith Holcombe to try luck at baseball

Alabama linebacker Keith Holcombe recently joined the Crimson Tide’s baseball team as an outfielder and will compete with them for the foreseeable future, according to Michael Casagrande of AL.com.

A former three-star recruit out of Hillcrest High School in Tuscaloosa, Holcombe was actually drafted in the 37th round of the MLB Amateur Draft by the Arizona Diamondbacks, but chose to stay in school. His former high school coach further commented on the matter at the time.

“I think for Keith, I think, baseball’s not’s done,” Hillcrest coach baseball coach Mark Garner told AL.com in 2014. “There’s been so much open doors just from this year that Keith has been able to look at for down the road and in the future and everything. It’s going to be exciting to see how football and baseball mesh together in his future.”

Holcombe took a redshirt as a true freshman in 2014 and saw plenty of action this past season, primarily on special teams. His biggest play of the season was blocking a punt against Florida in the SEC Championship Game.

He should have plenty of time to blossom and further develop as a football player under the legendary Nick Saban, but it’s still nice to know that he has baseball to fall back on in case life on the gridiron doesn’t pan out to his liking.
