Cam Newton seeking to join elite club

Carolina Panthers quarterback and definite NFL MVP Cam Newton is headed to the Super Bowl and, with a win, could become one of just three quarterbacks to have both a Super Bowl ring and a college football national championship win on their resume, according to NBC Sports.

The two who currently occupy the list? Why, none other than “Broadway” Joe Namath, who won a title with Alabama and a Super Bowl with the New York Jets, and Joe Montana, who achieved both with Notre Dame and the San Francisco 49ers.

Given the amount of great quarterbacks that have passed through the NFL since Montana, it’s surprising that no others have yet achieved this. Peyton Manning left Tennessee before the Vols won a title in 1998 and Steve Young left BYU a year before the Cougars won theirs in 1984. Tom Brady was a backup on the Michigan team that won it all in 1997. No matter how you look at it, considering how few college quarterbacks these days take the next step forward, it’s not at all a surprise that those who make this elite club are few and far between.

But Newton has been as confident as can be this season, not once bowing in the face of pressure. So long as he stays the course against a tough Broncos defense, don’t be shocked if this club’s duo becomes a trio.
