Jason Garrett discusses importance of Senior Bowl

Jason Garrett and the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff have the opportunity to get a close look and work with a number of the top senior prospects in the 2016 NFL Draft class as they lead the North Team in this year’s Senior Bowl.

After a day of practice, Garrett met with the media and began sharing his thoughts on his team.

Immediately, Garrett was asked about the intriguing quarterback prospect on his team, Carson Wentz, but would not go into detail. Garrett did note that he has been impressed by Wentz in meeting rooms, but he had only spent 24 hours with the signal-caller so there is still plenty of time to develop an opinion.

The good news for Garrett is that he will have plenty of live action to see when evaluating Wentz and the other standout players on his team, namely Ohio State Buckeyes standout Braxton Miller.

At media night on Tuesday, Garrett spoke on the importance of the Senior Bowl and what advantage he has coaching the all-star game rather than attending the NFL Scouting Combine.

“I think everyone who evaluates players appreciates this environment. It’s NFL coaching staffs coaching players for a week and they’re playing a football game,” Garrett said.

“The information that we get about the players at the combine is critical. You get a chance to interview them, to get the exact measurables – how tall they are, how much they weigh, how fast they are, how high they jump – all those things are a part of the evaluation. But I think if you ask any guy around the league what they appreciate more than anything else it is that they get to evaluate if you can play the game of football. This is the best opportunity for us to get a chance to do that.”

Garrett and his staff will be keeping a close eye on the prospects throughout the week before leading the North Squad onto the field for Saturday afternoon’s big game.

Will any of the North players impress Garrett enough to earn a spot on the Dallas Cowboys? If history repeats itself, Garrett and the ‘Boys could be drafting some familiar faces from Mobile in a matter of months.
