It’s been a rough week for Carolina Panthers quarterback and NFL MVP Cam Newton. Not only did he and his teammates lose the Super Bowl to the Denver Broncos this past Sunday, but he is dealing with fallout from abruptly leaving a postgame press conference.
But Newton has one unlikely ally in all of this, 8-year-old fan Stephen Graham, who sent Newton the following letter, according to USA Today.
“Dear Cam Newton, I’m sorry you lost, but here is a paper trofy.”
Newton hasn’t commented on Graham’s letter, nor has he responded, but Graham’s logic for sending the letter is just as sweet as can be.
“He’s my friend,” Graham said. “I just felt like it would make him a littler happier. When a friend falls down, the other friend always picks him up,”
Needless to say, though Newton is surely bummed out about losing on the grandest stage of all, he should definitely feel grateful about receiving this small letter and token of appreciation from young Graham. Newton definitely has a soft spot in his heart for the kids, as he gave a game ball to one in the stands all season long, so don’t be shocked if he reaches out to Graham personally in the near future, even if the youngster is still mastering spelling.
