Tennessee’s defensive line just got a lot stronger. According to a tweet from Wes Rucker of 247 Sports, the university has received a signed letter of intent from 5-star defensive end and No. 1 JUCO transfer Jonathan Kongbo.

Kongbo, who is from the Vancouver area and spent last season at Arizona Western College, tweeted on National Signing Day that he was signing with Tennessee, but a letter of intent was not received. He was also considering Ole Miss, USC, Oregon State, Alabama and Florida State as well as Tennessee, so the fact that there wasn’t much fanfare about his signing caused some speculation about how serious he was.
But the 6-foot-6, 265 pound edge rusher is now definitely headed to Knoxville, and Vols fans should be excited. Kongbo is remarkably strong and should provide an immediate impact on a Tennessee team that has shown slow improvement under coach Butch Jones.
Given how Tennessee ranked 45th in total defense last year, it isn’t farfetched to say that its position should improve in 2016 now that Kongbo is aboard.
