The University of Georgia’s football fans were recently rated the most miserable fan base in the game by Fox Sports, who had the following to say about Bulldogs fans.
“Our list has to be hardcore football schools that haven’t been playing very good football or, in the case of our No. 1 team, have been playing fine football but just can’t put it together for one season to win the dominant SEC. Mark Richt had 10-plus wins in nine of 15 seasons in Athens and got canned, which should tell you something about expectations at Georgia,” the report stated.
Fox has hit the nail right on the head, and how. Georgia went 145-51 (83-37 SEC) in 15 seasons in Athens and won two SEC crowns, but could never get the Bulldogs a national championship thanks to either Alabama, LSU or Florida dominating the conference. And Richt was let go last season despite going 9-3 (5-3 SEC), even though that can be partially attributed to star running back Nick Chubb suffering a horrific knee injury at midseason.
But the long and short of it is that when it comes to Georgia fans, the misery must be through the roof. All too often have the Bulldogs come out guns blazing and looked like the real deal, only to fall short at the finish line and become college football’s equivalent of an “also-ran.”
Hopefully, new coach Kirby Smart and usher in a new era and bring Georgia its first national championship since 1980.
