Antonio Cromartie released by Jets

Antonio Cromartie’s return to New York has come to an end. The former Pro Bowl cornerback was released by the Jets on Monday.

The news is not much of a surprise for fans of the game. The once stellar defensive back is coming off of a mediocre season. New York is able to save $8 million in cap room by cutting Cromartie, who was on the second of a four-year deal.

Last offseason, the Jets spent a lot of money trying to revamp the defense. They brought Cromartie in to team up with Darrell Revis (also a free agent).  Part of the reason for this move is so the Jets will have cap space to put the franchise tag on Muhammad Wilkerson.

The Jets have many options when it comes to replacing Cromartie, so they should not be worried.

Now that he is a free agent, where can Cromartie end up? Perhaps a return to the team that drafted him, the Chargers, could be in the cards. But the best fit might be in Pittsburgh for the Steelers as the look to rebuild a defense.
