After losing staff members to Vanderbilt, San Diego State head coach Rocky Long has started the addition process.
The Aztecs have hired Ernie Lawson as the team’s new defensive line coach to replace Osia Lewis. Lawson played for the Aztecs from 2007-2010, and will be taking on his first collegiate on-field coaching job.
“Ernie impressed me when he was a player on how he played,” Long said via NBC Sports. “He impressed me for his intelligence and passion for football. … For those that don’t know, we run a very unique defense here, and by college standards, a very complicated defense. It’s always best to get somebody who already has a little background in the scheme. He played in the scheme, so it’s much easier for him to get up to speed where he can coach the players.”
Lawson has spent the last two seasons has a high school assistant coach, and also was a graduate assistant at Michigan under then-head coach Brady Hoke. The addition of long fills the entire defensive staff with former players under Long.
