On Wednesday, the saga of the state of Tennessee’s athletic program got a little more complicated. Former Tennessee football player Drae Bowles made allegations that head coach Butch Jones called him a “traitor” for trying to help a young woman who alleged sexual assault against the football team.
Later on Wednesday, Jones released a statement about Bowles’ allegations. He denied the allegations by saying “I did all I could to assist the former student in question.”

This situation is getting more and more complicated and is just one of the many dark clouds surrounding Knoxville right now. From the men’s basketball program being slapped with NCAA violations that stemmed from former coach Donnie Tyndall’s presence with the team to the Lady Vols basketball team dropping out the AP Top 25 for the first time in 31 years, it has certainly been a rough year for the team.
Athletic director Dave Hart is expected to meet with the media later on Thursday afternoon.
