New York Knicks star Carmelo Anthony is in the throes of another lost season in the Big Apple, with New York sitting at 25-37 and six-and-a-half games out of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference, and the nine-time All Star isn’t happy about the situation.
Speaking during a media session today, Anthony discussed the Knicks’ recent struggles, which included Anthony getting into it with a heckler and saying that the fan should ask owner James Dolan for his money back. Anthony also discussed close friends LeBron James, Chris Paul and Dwyane Wade, all of whom have had success with their respective teams while Anthony has continued to be the best player on a bad team.
“I don’t think envy is kind of the right word,” he said about his friends succeeding. “I do look at my peers and say, ‘Damn, what am I doing wrong? I should be there.’ There was one point in time where they were looking at me like that. Made [the playoffs] 10, 11 years straight. Right now, it’s kind of a rough patch for me. I’m trying to figure out a way to get out of it.”
The worst part is that after this season, assuming that New York misses the postseason again, Anthony is under contract for at least another two years. He has a no-trade clause that he can waive, but teams are surely going to be hesitant to take on the $50.8 million he has remaining in guaranteed money.
In terms of what Anthony may be “doing wrong,” there isn’t really much that can be said or done. He’s averaging 21.5 points and eight rebounds per game and though his field goal percentage of 42.4 could be better, he’s 31 years old and has bad knees. If anything, he can focus on driving the lane more and less on his jump shot.
