UNC-Asheville defeats Winthrop to win Big South Tournament

UNC-Asheville defeated Winthrop 77-68 to win the Big South Conference Tournament and earn a trip to the upcoming NCAA Tournament.

Dwayne Sutton led the Bulldogs with 25 points and 18 rebounds as UNC-Asheville’s defense locked up Winthrop, as the Eagles shot just 35.2 percent from the field and 15.2 percent from three-point range, making just 5 of 33 attempts from beyond the arc.

UNC-Asheville thus wins its first Big South title since 2012 and its first under coach Nick McDevitt, who took over the program in 2013 following the resignation of longtime coach Eddie Biedenbach.

The Bulldogs are sure to receive a low seeding come Selection Sunday in a week but given how much they shut down Winthrop, they may very well be a team with some upset and Cinderella potential.
