The Green Bay Phoenix defeated the Wright State Raiders 78-69 at Detroit’s Joe Louis Arena to win this year’s Horizon League Tournament and thus earn a trip to the 2016 NCAA Tournament next week. Charles Cooper and Jordan Fouse each had 16 points for the Phoenix, who took home their third ever Horizon League title tonight and first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 1996.
Thus continues the underdog story for Green Bay, who beat Horizon League staple Valparaiso in the tournament semifinal yesterday in a hard-fought overtime victory. The Phoenix carried that momentum today as they refused to give Wright State an inch, trailing just once in the game and committed just eight turnovers. Green Bay also had incredible shot selection from start to finish, shooting 46 percent from the field as well as three-point range.
Even more amazing is that Green Bay has accomplished this much in its first season under coach Linc Darner, who came to the program after nine seasons at Division II Florida Southern and succeeded Brian Wardle, who left after last season to become the head coach at Bradley.
Needless to say, Green Bay has a lot of momentum on its side and depending on seeding, may need to be considered a dark horse team come next week.
