It was announced on Sunday that the Winnipeg Jets will host the Edmonton Oilers at the 2016 Tim Hortons Heritage Classic on Sunday October 23, 2016. This is the latest edition in a series of outdoor games introduced recently into the regular season schedule by the NHL.
It was also announced that Wayne Gretzky, widely regarded as the best hockey player in history, will participate in the traditional alumni game, preceding the outdoor game. Gretzky will captain the Oilers alumni team on Saturday October 22nd. Gretzky retired in 1999 and hasn’t graced the ice very often since.
“I don’t really play in a lot of alumni games,” Gretzky said via video from Los Angeles. “Every now and then you get a special event, and this event is going to be really unique, really special.”
The Ontario native recorded 2,857 points in 1,487 games played from 1979 to 1999. He holds the NHL record for most career goals, assists and total points, records that many think, will never be broken. He is indisputably one of the finest athletes in the world.
The return of Gretzky to NHL ice will surely draw crowds and viewers in October 2016 and is worthy of high anticipation around the world.
