LaQuan McGowan impresses at Baylor pro day

When 400-plus-pound Baylor tight end LaQuan McGowan first burst onto the scene with a 20-yard touchdown against Michigan State in the 2016 Cotton Bowl, people didn’t immediately think that he was going to be a superstar in the NFL or even have a chance to play in the league at that.

However, he is trying to show that he can play at the next level and he got to show off some of his skills to NFL head coaches at Baylor’s pro day on Wednesday. In fact, he had a pretty impressive showing.

McGowan ran an official 5.48 in the 40-yard dash. Now, if this were anybody else, coaches would laugh it off and never think twice about it, but you have to remember that McGowan weighed in today at 405 pounds, so a 5.48 is very good.

McGowan also recorded a 24-inch vertical, an 8-foot-2 broad jump, and 30 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. Those numbers aren’t superstar or first-round worthy numbers, but it could help his stock out in the Draft.

Right now, a lot of scouts have him listed as a guard, but his experience as a tight end gives coaches the satisfaction of knowing he has strong and quick hands, which is very important as an offensive lineman.
