Gonzaga upends Utah 82-59 to reach Sweet Sixteen

Gonzaga proved to be far better than its No. 11 seeding tonight when it destroyed the No. 3 Utah Utes by a score of 82-59 to reach the Sweet Sixteen for the second year in a row. Eric McClellan led the Bulldogs with 20 points while star center Domantas Sabonis chipped in 19 points and 10 rebounds and former Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer added 17 of his own.

Gonzaga shot an amazing 56 percent from the field as a team and also drilled 47 percent of its threes and was also great on defense. Utah was out-rebounded 34-24 and committed 13 turnovers, with star center Jakob Poeltl being completely shut out. The Austrian seven-footer had just five points and four rebounds on the evening as the Utes shot just 42 percent from the floor, completely outmatched by a hungry Gonzaga team.

Next for the Bulldogs will be the winner of tomorrow’s second round matchup between No. 10 Syracuse and No. 15 Middle Tennessee State, the latter of which eliminated No. 2 Michigan State yesterday. Needless to say, come tip-off in Chicago Next week, it’s going to be hard to count on Gonzaga as a team that will simply run out of gas.
