Former World Series of Fighting champion Jessica Aguilar hasn’t made the initial splash she was hoping to make when she vacated her title and joined the UFC’s strawweight division.
Aguilar fell short in her Octagon debut, losing a decision to Claudia Gadelha at UFC 190, but was hoping to return to the win column at UFC 197 next month.
Unfortunately, Aguilar announced on her Facebook page that a serious knee injury will force her out of her scheduled return bout against Juliana Lima at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas on April 23.
“I’m disappointed to announce that unfortunately I have had to withdraw from my upcoming fight with Juliana Lima at UFC 197 due to an injury sustained during training. I tore my ACL and will be undergoing surgery this upcoming Tuesday to repair the injury and start the road to recovery,” Aguilar wrote. “I have a great doctor and team around me; I’m confident that with their expertise, love and support, along with my determination to make a full recovery as fast as possible, I will be back in the Octagon before you know it. I’m focused on getting healthy and becoming the UFC champion.”
It’s a very disappointing turn of events for the American Top Team product who entered the UFC as the top-ranked strawweight fighter in the world.
Now, Jessica Aguilar will just have to wait until she is 100 percent healthy to make another run towards the top of the division.
UFC 197 is headlined by a light heavyweight championship rematch between current title holder Daniel Cormier and former title holder Jon Jones.
