Cleveland Browns should draft QB and not sign RG3, expert says

The Cleveland Browns appear to be the team most likely to sign former No. 2 overall pick Robert Griffin III to play quarterback for them next year, but one expert in Charles Davis of NFL.com feels that the laughingstock of the NFL should instead look to next month’s NFL Draft to fill the position.

“If you’re rebuilding an organization, go ahead and do the whole thing. You rebuilt it at the top with the decision makers, you rebuilt it with a new head coach. I would go in the draft and get (Wentz or Goff),” Davis said when recently appearing on NFL Network. “… Whoever they want to go get, that’s what I would do. If you’re bringing in Robert Griffin III, if you’re going new, it just doesn’t feel right because it’s a total reclamation.”

Davis is absolutely right. Though Griffin may still have some effective play left in the tank, let’s not forget that he entered the NFL as a dual-threat quarterback out of Baylor and lost his mobility when he tore knee ligaments at the close of his rookie season, and has not been the same since.

That said, given how the Browns just lost two key members of their offensive line in Pro Bowl center Alex Mack and tackle Mitchell Schwartz, it’s probably best to use the No. 2 pick in April’s draft to select a young quarterback with fresher legs who can use at least some footwork in anticipation of the pocket collapsing.

Still, as the Cleveland Browns have taught us many times before, anything is possible.
