MMA is finally legalized in New York

Finally, MMA is legal in New York.

On Tuesday, a bill to legalize the sport of mixed martial arts in the state of New York finally made its way to the New York Assembly floor for a vote. The bill went through multiple steps before being presented on the floor for the up-and-down vote.

It is something that has been proposed for years and now the fight for MMA legalization in New York is over.

After plenty of political posturing and grandstanding from representatives on both sides of the argument, the vote was held and the MMA bill passed by an overwhelming margin, 113-25.

A professional mixed martial event cannot take place in New York for at least 120 days to give the athletic commission proper time to carry out its responsibilities — which includes passing rules and licensing for promoters/fighters.

Currently, the plan for the largest promotion in MMA, the UFC, is to hold an event in November.

With so many New York natives on the UFC roster, the promotion could put together an impressive lineup for the historic show.
