NFL releases list of rules changes

The NFL Owners’ Meetings are currently underway in Boca Raton, Florida, and all 32 owners have agreed on a number of rule changes set to take place next year. Among the new rules, which were posted to Twitter by Buzzfeed’s Lindsey Adler, all chop blocks are now illegal and the horse collar tackling penalty has been expanded to include players’ nameplates.

Also among the changes are the line of scrimmage for extra points being moved to the 15-yard line, permanently, and the five-yard penalty for an eligible receiver illegally touching the ball after being out of bounds has been replaced with a simple loss of down. That’s clearly a move to try and speed the game up, which I think everyone can agree needs to happen.

That said, with training camp fast approaching, it’s going to be interesting to see how strictly the new rules are enforced. There will surely be an adjustment period of some sort and players will surely soon offer their opinions, but some of these changes are certainly for the best.
