North Carolina man arrested for failure to return 2002 VHS rental

Today, the latest chapter of “Crazy Arrests in America” takes us down to Concord, North Carolina, near the city of Charlotte. Per a report from local news station WSOC, a man named James Meyers was pulled over while driving his daughter to school on Tuesday because of a broken tail light, but was found to have an outstanding warrant against him.

The reason for said warrant? Well, apparently, Meyers rented the Tom Green classic Freddy Got Fingered back in 2002 and never returned it. The twist? The warrant was for an outstanding VHS tape.

Even crazier is that Meyers actually has a COURT DATE over this misdemeanor charge. I’m sorry, but what’s the point? Per the report above, the video store in question has long since closed, so is the family that owned it just looking to collect for the sake of earning some extra cash?

More importantly, why is a huge deal being made over a VHS? Can you remember the last time you watched something that wasn’t on DVD or Blu-Ray, or a streaming service?

Either way, here’s hoping that the judge takes a look at Meyers’ case, rolls his eyes and simply says “Case dismissed.”
