The speculation surrounding San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick continues even after his $11.9 million salary for 2016 has become fully guaranteed, as Eric Branch of The San Francisco Chronicle is reporting that the former second-round pick met with Denver Broncos executive VP and GM John Elway on Thursday.
Details of the meeting weren’t released, but it should also be noted that Kaepernick has been rehabbing knee and shoulder injuries in Vail, Colorado, about 100 miles from Denver. Thus, it would be relatively easy for Elway to get there and meet with Kaepernick.
And there’s no denying that the Broncos have been in touch with the 49ers over acquiring Kaepernick, as Denver is hurting for a quarterback following the retirement of Peyton Manning and Brock Osweiler signing with the Houston Texans in free agency. Unfortunately, Denver is not willing to give up more than a fourth-round pick for Kaepernick.
That said, the fact that Elway met with Colin Kaepernick on Thursday suggests two things. First, the Broncos are still interested in making a deal with San Francisco despite Kaepernick’s salary being guaranteed for 2016.
The second is that with OTAs not far off, Denver is getting desperate.
