A’Shawn Robinson was told by Nick Saban to turn pro

Former Alabama defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson recently appeared on SiriusXM NFL radio and said that though he considered returning to school for his senior season, coach Nick Saban convinced him to declare for the upcoming NFL Draft.

A'Shawn Robinson (@AshawnRobinson): I thought about staying another year at Bama but Coach Saban thought it was the best for me to come out.

It’s certainly interesting to hear this development, as the NFL Draft’s regulations are stricter compared to those of the NBA. Players must be at least three years removed from high school, so being a one-and-done is not an option. Given how Robinson had 46 tackles with 3.5 sacks, a return to Tuscaloosa in hopes of winning another championship seemed possible.

But Saban felt that his player was ready to turn pro, and the scouts felt the same after Robinson’s performance at the NFL Scouting Combine. Just why Saban offered that advice is unknown, but it was probably because there was another young defensive lineman ready and waiting in the wings.
