The Texas Longhorns and Notre Dame fighting Irish have moved their season opener back a day to Sunday, September 4 according to The Austin American-Statesman.
“Having worked in both programs, I have a deep appreciation of the great football pride, tradition and passion at Texas and Notre Dame,” Texas coach Charlie Strong said in a statement. “This is a game we’re obviously very excited about and really looking forward to. I think moving it to Sunday with no NFL games when it can really be in the spotlight will make it that much more special.”
This game is definitely one that could do incredibly well in a Sunday TV slot, especially without any competition from the NFL. The Longhorns have a strong incoming recruiting class for 2016 and should look much stronger than last year’s 5-7 (4-5 Big 12) finish. Notre Dame, on the other hand, could be in something of a transitionary year after losing a number of key players, namely wideout Will Fuller and defensive back KeiVarae Russell, to the NFL.
And with a town with fans as hardcore as Austin’s, there should be plenty of life in the stands as well.
