Though the Los Angeles Rams ultimately won the sweepstakes for the No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick held by the Tennessee Titans, the New York Jets also apparently made a significant offer.
Per DraftInsider, the Jets made the Titans a “serious offer” that included draft picks as well as veteran defensive lineman Muhammad Wilkerson. Sadly, the Rams’ offer was deemed better.
But it’s clear to see why the Jets would have wanted to make such a move. GM Mike Maccagnan still has not been able to re-sign veteran quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick, who performed very well in offensive coordinator Chan Gailey’s system in 2015, and trading Wilkerson not only would have freed up an extra $9 million that could be used to up Fitzpatrick’s offer, but given the Jets a shot at drafting Ole Miss tackle Laremy Tunsil with the No. 1 pick in wake of D’Brickashaw Ferguson’s retirement.
However, there are still many ways in which the Jets could trade up in the upcoming draft, so stay tuned to Campus Sports for further updates!
