NHL Playoffs 2016: Andrew Shaw apologizes for homophobic slur

More antics, unrelated to the actual game of hockey, occured in the Stanley Cup playoffs, this time involving reigning champs, the Chicago Blackhawks.

The Hawks suffered their third loss to the St. Louis Blues, last night in a heated game. Tensions ran high as fights broke out instigated by both teams. Hawks goalie Corey Crawford started a fight with Blues forward Robby Fabbri, earning the Hawks a controversial power play.

However, the big story of the night involved Chicago winger Andrew Shaw.

Shaw was sent to the box, late in the game and was not happy about it. While in the box he was heard using a homophobic slur, directed at one of the linesman. Shaw was heavily reprimanded on social media and released a statement of apology, today.

“I am sincerely sorry for the insensitive remarks that I made last night while in the penalty box. When I got home and saw the video, it was evident that what I did was wrong, no matter the circumstances. I apologize to many people, including the gay and lesbian community, the Chicago Blackhawks organization, Blackhawks fans and anyone else I may have offended. I know my words were hurtful and I will learn from my mistake,” said Shaw in a presser, by the Blackhawks, today.

The Blackhawks organization also released this statement, “We are extremely disappointed in Andrew Shaw’s actions last night. His comments do not reflect what we stand for as an organization. We are proud to have an inclusive and respectful environment, and to support various initiatives such as the You Can Play Project and the Chicago Gay Hockey Association. We will use this opportunity to further educate our players and organization moving forward, so that we all may learn from it.”

The Hawks will face the Blues again Thursday, in what could be the final game of their series. The Blues lead the Hawks, 3-1, in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs.
