Justin Simon transfers from Arizona to St. John’s

Arizona guard Justin Simon will transfer to St. John’s, according to a post on his Twitter and a confirmation from CBS Sports’ Jon Rothstein.

A former four-star recruit out of New Hampshire’s Brewster Academy, Simon is originally from southern California and averaged 2.3 points across 7.5 minutes per game as a true freshman last season. That said, with Allonzo Trier set to return for his sophomore season, it’s clear this decision came from wanting more playing time.

But Simon is heading to a much different situation at St. John’s compared to what he had at Arizona. The Red Storm went 8-24 (1-17 Big East) last season, the team’s first under coach, alum and Hall of Famer Chris Mullin, and have not had a significant NCAA Tournament run since making the Elite Eight under Mike Jarvis in 1999.

Still, combined with Michigan State transfer Marvin Clark, Simon could very well be the key to St. John’s finally resurrecting itself once he returns from sitting out next season.
