Somewhere along the line, rumors of a potential boxing match between boxing star Floyd Mayweather Jr. and UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor began generating some buzz.
There is no reason to believe a boxing match between the two would ever actually happen — in fact, it is such a complicated situation that it is virtually impossible McGregor would ever be released from his UFC contract to compete in another sport he has never competed in before — but people still seemed to love the idea.
Surprisingly, there are even some who believe McGregor would have a chance in the squared circle against one of boxing’s all-time greats. Then, there are those with more common sense.
You can include UFC commentator Joe Rogan in the latter category.
Rogan recently discussed the fantasy matchup between Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather, simply saying McGregor has no business being in the ring with Mayweather.
“I think Floyd Mayweather is one of the greatest—if not the greatest—boxers of all time. I think Conor has no business being in a boxing ring with him and I think Floyd would probably embarrass him,” Rogan said during a radio appearance.
“If it went to an MMA fight, I think Floyd Mayweather has no business being in a UFC cage with Conor McGregor and Conor would embarrass him. I think they would both embarrass each other in their respective sports. I don’t think the fight is ever going to happen, and I think it’s a bunch of nonsense and a bunch of hype. I think that’s all it is.”
It’s nice to see a sense of reason in the discussion.
While Mayweather and McGregor are two of the biggest personalities in combat sports, they have completely different skillsets that make for an uneven match.
Then again, if people were willing to pay $100 for a Mayweather-Pacquiao pay-per-view that was way past due, who knows what could happen. It just doesn’t seem likely and a boxing match would really dim McGregor’s light.
