Report: Handgun in Cam Robinson arrest reported stolen in Alabama

The legal situation regarding Alabama Crimson Tide star offensive lineman Cam Robinson and defensive back Hootie Jones has just taken another interesting turn.

Early Tuesday morning, Robinson and Jones were arrested on a myriad of charges, including possession of a controlled substance, illegal possession of a firearm and illegal possession of a stolen firearm, a felony.

The arrest took place in Louisiana.

However, according to a release from the Monroe Police Department, the firearm found under the driver’s seat of Robinson’s car — which he was driving — was reported stolen in Baldwin, Alabama.

“On May 17, 2016 at 2:33AM a Monroe police officer was patrolling 2300 Sycamore St (Forsythe Park). The officer observed a single vehicle parked inside the park after closed hours. The officer made contact with the driver Cameron Robinson, and did smell a strong odor of suspected marijuana coming from inside the vehicle. It was at this time that the officer observed a handgun laying in the lap of the front seat passenger who was identified as Laurence Jones,” the police report read.

“The suspects were asked to step out of the vehicle, to which they complied, and the subsequent search revealed additional suspected marijuana, and an additional handgun that had been reported stolen out of Baldwin Co, Alabama. At this time Cameron Robinson and Laurence Jones were advised of their Miranda rights and arrested. Robinson is being charged with Possession of CDS 1 illegal possession of marijuana; illegal possession of a firearm; and possession of a stolen firearm. Jones is being charged with Possession of CDS 1 illegal possession of marijuana and illegal possession of a firearm. Both individuals were booked into the Ouachita Parish Correctional Center where they posted bond. The case has been forwarded to the District Attorney’s office. The investigation is ongoing.”

There have been no further details.

Alabama head coach Nick Saban released a brief statement on the arrests.

“We all have a responsibility and obligation to represent the university, ourselves and our family in a first-class way,” Saban said, via al.com. “Obviously, we’re a little disappointed that better choices and decisions weren’t made here, but until we get the facts, we don’t really have much else to say about it.”

Robinson is considered a potential No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, so the legal charges carry some very serious implications. If there is one thing we have learned in recent years, it is that teams shy away from players with off-field issues.

We will just have to let the legal process play out to see what happens next.
