The Alabama Crimson Tide will be losing a pair of defensive backs going into the 2016 season and it looks like they could be closing in on a decision. Maurice Smith and Shawn Burgess-Becker could both be looking at a move to the state of Florida.
It has been reported that Smith, a graduate transfer, could look towards moving to Miami for his final season of eligibility. It was reported by State of the U that he is very confident in what Mark Richt can do with the team going into the 2016 season.
However, his family has said that a return to Alabama is not out of the question.
In a statement, his family said: “[Smith] has chosen to entertain options for his senior season of college football… [having] positioned him[self] with the option to either complete his college football career at Alabama, or exercise his graduate-transfer option to play his true Senior season at another institution.”
For Burgess-Becker, he could also be looking to make a move to the Sunshine State. It was reported that there is a “98-percent chance” he ends up at UCF this season.
While Maurice Smith gets to play immediately no matter where he ends up, it is different for his teammate. Burgess-Becker was a true freshman for Alabama in 2015, so he will likely have to sit out this fall and begin playing again in 2017.
Both players are very experienced. Smith played in 41 games through three seasons at Alabama, starting two games, while Burgess-Becker played mostly on special teams in 13 contests in 2015.
