On Monday, the Big 12 announced that they had approved possible expansion and it became pretty clear that they would be adding a few teams over the next few months. It certainly seems like the BYU Cougars are excited to possibly get an invite in the near future.
The Cougars have been right at the top of the conference’s list for expansion and athletic director Tom Holmoe talked about the possibility of getting invited to join the Big 12 by season’s end.
“We are obviously excited the leadership of the Big 12 has advised commissioner Bob Bowlsby to review potential expansion candidates,” Holmoe said in a statement. “BYU is known for its academic excellence and I believe we have an exceptional athletic program. As I’ve stated before, I would like to see our student-athletes compete at the highest level.”
The Cougars certainly seem like the best fit to join the Big 12 as they can bring in major revenue for both football and men’s basketball. On the gridiron, they have won at least eight games in nine of the last 10 seasons while winning at least 23 basketball games in each of the last five seasons as a member of the West Cost Conference.
BYU hasn’t been in a football conference since they were a member of the Mountain West from 1999-2010.
