The 2017 NFL Draft class will be one of the deepest when it comes to the running back position. One of those special backs will likely be Oklahoma’s Samaje Perine and it looks like at least one analyst is pretty high on him.
NFL Media analyst Daniel Jeremiah previewed Perine and what he should be able to do for an NFL club in the future. He even compared the Sooner to former NFL running back Michael Turner, who was considered one of the quickest players in the league at the time.
“Perine is a pure power runner and he provides a physical identity for the Oklahoma offense. I see some similarities to Michael Turner when he was coming out of college. They have similar builds and rarely go down on first contact. They both have exceptional balance and excel in short-yardage situations. While studying Perine, I couldn’t help but notice No. 25 for Oklahoma, Joe Mixon. He is a dynamic runner with stop/start quickness and excellent instincts. Mix in quarterback Baker Mayfield, and it’s easy to see why Oklahoma is getting so much preseason love. They are loaded in the backfield.”
During his nine-year career in the NFL, Turner ran for over 7,300 yards and 66 touchdowns. Perine should be pretty honored to be compared to a player like him.
It is going to be interesting to see what Perine does this year after he has rushed for over 3,000 yards and 37 touchdowns in two seasons. The Sooners open the season on Sept. 3 against Houston at NRG Stadium.
