Texas A&M defensive back Justin Evans was one of the heroes on opening weekend, making a game-winning play after seemingly suffering a leg injury at the end of regulation.
Now, he is being honored for his gutsy performance.
On Tuesday, the Football Writers Association of America announced Evans has been named the FWAA/Bronko Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week for his Week 1 performance during the Aggies’ 31-24 overtime victory over UCLA.
Evans, who made an interception with under a minute to go in regulation to force overtime, also broke up the final play of the game to secure the win for Texas A&M.
The 6-foot-1, 200-pounder also contributed eight tackles on the afternoon.
As a result of his Week 1 honor, Evans will be added to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List for the remainder of the season. The National Defensive Player of the Year award finalists will be announced on Thursday, Nov. 17.
Evans and the Aggies return to action this weekend against Prairie View A&M in College Station.
