Tennessee going with ‘hot hand’ in the backfield

The Tennessee Volunteers did not have a great time against the Appalachian State Mountaineers last week and they could be in even more trouble against Virginia Tech this week. However, it seems that head coach Butch Jones wants to continue to improve their ground attack this week.

Jones spoke with reporters and talked about he is a firm believer of establishing a great running game before opening up the passing game.

He praised his two backs — Jalen Hurd and Alvin Kamara — and talked about their contrasting style of play.

I do believe in a hot hand at running back,” Jones said. “When a running back gets into a rhythm and routine, we want to feed him. We have a great dimension to our offense in the differences between Alvin and Jalen.

“I do think a hot hand does have something to do with it as well.”

It will be interesting to see how this offensive line holds up against the Hokies on Saturday. They racked up only 127 yards on the ground against the Mountaineers, who are relatively small on the defensive side of the ball.

The Vols and Hokies meet up at 8 p.m. EST on ABC in the Battle at Bristol.
