SMU QB Matt Davis out for season with knee injury

The SMU Mustangs are not having much luck under center. This week, it was announced that starting quarterback Matt Davis will miss the remainder of the 2016 college football season because of a knee injury.

SMU head coach Chad Morris confirmed Davis suffered a torn ACL in the season-opener.

“He’s hurt and disappointed,” Morris said per the Dallas Morning News. “Matt has meant so much to our program. He’s a great senior, a phenomenal leader.”

Davis sat out last weekend’s loss to the Baylor Bears.

In the season-opening win over North Texas, Davis threw for 155 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 91 yards on the ground. Unfortunately, that is the last we will see of the 6-foot-1, 212-pound senior in a Mustangs uniform this year.

Davis, who began his career at Texas A&M, has 3,300 yards, 21 touchdowns and 13 interceptions throughout his collegiate career.

Because of the injury, SMU will be seeking a sixth-year of eligibility. In the meantime, the Mustangs will move forward with redshirt freshman Ben Hicks under center.
