CM Punk made his UFC debut at UFC 203 this past Saturday in a losing effort to Mickey Gall. Despite the criticism stars like Conor McGregor and president Dana White give them, there seems to be a large number of WWE superstars that were supporting their former colleague.
One of those superstars is former WWE World Heavyweight Champion and Smackdown Live General Manager Daniel Bryan. He spoke with PhillyVoice’s Nick Piccone after last night’s episode and he mentioned that he was rooting for Punk at the event.
“I was really hoping (CM Punk) would win. Punk and I have never been best friends or anything like that. I don’t even think I have his number in my phone,” Bryan said.
He then commented on Punk’s post-fight speech, referring to it as a promo, and he seemed to agree on what he said.
“It’s the whole thing with me and him, and guys like Sami Zayn and Neville even trying to wrestle… It’s just this idea of you have this dream that everybody tells you that you can’t do, but you just keep going after it,” Bryan explained.
Bryan and Punk broke into the WWE at about the same time after they worked together for years on the independent scene. They went on to have multiple matches both with and against each other in their careers, including a match for the WWE Championship at Money in the Bank in 2012.
