The LSU Tigers made the decision to fire head coach Les Miles over the weekend after stumbling out of the gate to a 2-2 start. The news came as a shock because of the timing, but the possibility of Miles being booted from Baton Rouge has been looming over the program for years.
In fact, according to Texas A&M defensive coordinator John Chavis, who was previously on Miles’ staff with the same duties, LSU has been plotting Les Miles’ demise for years.
“It’s always sad to see a man and a coach the caliber of Les get pushed out,” Chavis told ESPN’s Chris Low.
“He’s a Hall of Famer and a legend in the state of Louisiana. I was blessed that he gave me an opportunity to coach at a place like LSU, but I can’t say I’m surprised that he’s gone. They were trying to fire him when I was there, and I told him so.”
Just last season, LSU was close to firing Miles after failing to reach 10-wins before pulling a last-minute switcharoo to keep the coach in town. Now, they finally had enough and decided it was best to move on.
LSU will take the field for the first time without Miles in over a decade when the Tigers host Missouri on Saturday afternoon.
