Purdue OL Martesse Patterson arrested over battery of ex-teammate

In an incident that was reported to the Lafayette police on Sept 11., Purdue Boilermakers offensive lineman Martesse Patterson was arrested Wednesday for felony battery.

Patterson, a 340-pound sophomore, is alleged to have punched former teammate Alex Hilger. Hilger was a wide reciever who joined the team as a walk-on and played in 12 games last season; his affiliation with the Boilermakers was terminated on May 20.

As a result of the incident, Hilger suffered a “displaced fracture of the left mandible and a non-displaced fracture of the right mandible.”

According to the affidavit, on Sept. 7 Patterson entered Hilgers room to “borrow some property.” Hilger said no, and Patterson took it anyway. Hilger then walked over to Pattersons room to ask for it back and was struck in the face.

Patterson has admitted to both taking the property and striking Hilger. Patterson was demoted to the second team during practice, but was still allowed to attend. He was present as recently as last Wednesday.

Patterson is being held on $10,000 bail and $1,000 cash.
