Week 1 of the 2017 college football season wrapped up with an epic matchup between Tennessee and Georgia Tech on the national stage.
On Monday night, the Volunteers and Yellow Jackets went back and forth in a thrilling game that came down to the wire. After Tennessee rallied from behind to tie the game and force overtime, it came down to one final play.
At the end of the second overtime, the Yellow Jackets had the opportunity to kick the extra point and tie the game or go for the win with a two-point conversion.
Georgia Tech opted to take the risk, but came up just short after quarterback TaQuon Marshall’s forward pass attempt came up short. Even had the ball not hit the ground first, sophomore running back KirVonte Benson was stopped just shy of the goaline.
When the final whistle rang, it was the Vols who escaped Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta with a 42-41 victory.

Tennessee returns to action next weekend against Indiana State. Georgia Tech, meanwhile, also returns to the field on Saturday when the team welcomes Jacksonville State to Bobby Dodd Stadium.
