The Jay Jacobs era at Auburn University could be coming to its and.
According to a report from 247 Sports, Auburn is “on the verge” of firing the athletic director after the basketball program was named in the FBI investigation into bribery and corruption in college basketball.
Auburn also had its softball program under scrutiny in the past year due to a scandal of its own.
From the report:
Jacobs’ support has dwindled in the wake of several incidents, starting with the departure of the previous softball staff after allegations of an improper relationship between former associate head coach Corey Myers and a player. That was followed by the stunning arrest of basketball assistant coach Chuck Person on bribery and fraud charges, an accusation that an academic counselor had taken a test for a former player and a lawsuit alleging discrimination filed by a former track coach.
The report implied Jacobs’ firing is imminent, saying “the only remaining question is when the announcement will come.”
If Jacobs is removed from his position as athletic director, it will immediately become one of the most high profile openings in the nation.
