College football coaching rumors are running wild and the Florida Gators vacancy is one of the most intriguing opportunities.
So, as you would expect, that means a number of high-profile names have been linked to the job opening since Jim McElwain was fired from the position. Names like Dan Mullen of Mississippi State and Oregon’s Willie Taggart have been floated, but there’s another big name joining the list.
Enter former Oregon and NFL coach Chip Kelly.
According to Pete Thamel of Yahoo! Sports Pete Thamel, Kelly is currently being vetted by the university as a potential coaching candidate.
…. with sources indicating that a thorough vetting of Kelly has begun. That includes calls to NFL executives to do general background on Kelly and exploration of his NCAA issues at Oregon.
Kelly would certainly be someone who could rejuvenate the Gators offense and his high-flying approach would be a great addition to the SEC.
Will he ultimately sign a contract in Gainesville, only time will tell, but the interest is there and if a deal does come to fruition Thamel states it could be in place as soon as December.
