Los Angeles Lakers coach Luke Walton has finally responded to LaVar Ball’s criticism of the team’s coaching staff and how they are coaching his son Lonzo, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft.
But while Ball had harsh words for Walton and company, Walton took the high road when responding.
Walton was asked what he makes of LaVar calling the coaches “soft,” ignoring the comments and instead turning the question into an opportunity to praise Lonzo and the job LaVar has done raising him.
“Absolutely nothing,” Walton said. “I was really proud of our media guys this morning for not asking about that because it’s not what we’re here to do or talk about.
“I will say this: I think he has done a phenomenal job as a father with Lonzo because Lonzo is a special young man. He’s selfless, he’s unselfish, his teammates love him, he cares about them, he plays the right way. So he’s done a great job with that, but we’re not concerned with what parents think of how we’re coaching the team.”
That’s how it’s done.
LaVar Ball thrives on attention and getting a reaction from people throughout the media and basketball world. By brushing LaVar off, Walton proves his focus is simply on his players and not any outside distractions.
