USC offensive coordinator Tee Martin, a former star quarterback for the Tennessee Volunteers, has popped up as a potential candidate for the Vols head coaching vacancy.
With Martin’s name now being linked to a head coaching job, his current boss, USC head coach Clay Helton, decided to comment on what he believes a program will be getting if they choose hire Martin to lead their program.
To say Helton gave Martin a glowing endorsement would be an understatement.
Helton delivered some serious praise, saying Martin is ready to be a head coach whenever the call comes.
“I would say that Tee is going to be an exceptional head coach,” Helton said. “It’s one of the reasons that he’s stayed here in this period of time, to groom himself for that opportunity. It’s an opportunity that I think he deserves. It’s an opportunity that I think he’s ready for when the time comes. And I’ve always been thankful for each and every day I’ve had Tee Martin here.
“I knew the time at some point in time will end, but like I said before, he’s the most complete coach that I’ve ever been around. And I know his day is coming to lead a program. Whoever decides to make him their head coach is going to get a very valuable commodity and somebody that’s going to do a terrific job for their program.”
Martin led the Volunteers to two SEC Championships and a national title as quarterback. As a coach, he has developed a reputation as an incredible recruiter.
As Helton said, Martin has all of the makings to be a great coach. It just remains to be seen when and where he will be offered a head coaching gig. Could his alma mater come calling after the Greg Schiano debacle? Only time will tell, but it’s certainly an interesting possibility.
