UFC veteran Diego Sanchez has always been a fan favorite thanks to his willingness to step into the cage and throw down with everyone. That took on a new meaning over the weekend, however, when Sanchez stepped into the cage with Isaac “The Shermanator” Marquez.
Sanchez and Marquez have formed a special bond since Marquez, who has down syndrome, first walked in to Jackson Wink MMA Academy.
Finally, Sanchez got the opportunity to make Marquez’s dream come true.
Sanchez and Marquez had a bout inside of the cage at Isleta Casino and Resort in Alburquerque. The fight went down at Jackson-Wink “Fight Night 2,” headlined by Damacio Page vs. Jesus Urbina.
The awesome gesture came to an end when Marquez scored a first-round submission victory over the UFC vet.
“Most down syndrome adults don’t live past 45,” Sanchez said before the bout, via KRQE. “Isaac is 32, and I just wanted to see this young man be healthy. Exercise and martial arts are one of the most healthy things you can do.”
Sanchez shared video of the finish on social media.
What an incredible moment all around. Kudos to everyone involved in making the bout happen.
