The SMU football program is reportedly closing in on hiring its next head coach.
On Monday morning, reports surfaced that the Mustangs are targeting former Cal Golden Bears and Louisiana Tech Bulldogs head coach Sonny Dykes to replace Chad Morris, who left the program to take over at Arkansas. Sports Illustrated had the report.
Morris could reportedly wrap up a deal at SMU by the end of the day.
The 48-year-old head coach spent seven years as a head coach where he compiled an overall record of 41-45. During the 2017 campaign, Dykes spent the year on Gary Patterson’s TCU staff as an offensive analyst.
This past season, the Mustangs finished the year with a 7-5 overall record. However, the team went just 4-4 in conference play.
After leading the team since 2015. Prior to taking over at SMU, Morris rose to prominence as the offensive coordinator at Clemson.
