At UFC 220 on Saturday night, heavyweight champion Stipe Miocic and light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier put on dominant performances to retain their titles.
Following the event, questions immediately began swirling regarding what could be next for both men.
And considering Cormier was undefeated at heavyweight — including winning the Strikeforce Heavyweight Grand Prix — there was buzz about a potential superfight between the two.
While UFC president Dana Whitewasnon-committal about his plans, he did express some interest in the possibility.
“I was just talking to [Cormier],” White said after the event. “I don’t see why he couldn’t fight at heavyweight. If he thinks that Cain might come back, then if he won the belt, he could give it up. But either way, it’s a good fight. With all the defenses he has, Stipe just broke the record for most defenses, so it’s a fun fight. … I think that’s a fight people would like to see.”

Of course, getting both men to agree to the fight could be difficult.
The biggest factor appears to be former UFC heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez, an American Kickboxing Academy teammate of Daniel Cormier.
Cormier moved from heavyweight to light heavyweight to allow Velasquez to reign the division, but injuries have slowed Velasquez down and ended what once looked like a potentially dominating campaign. And with Velasquez back in training, returning to heavyweight for a one-off fight may not be something that Cormier has interest in.
There’s no denying the fight would sell, though.
As for Miocic, he was also non-committal on the possibility saying, “Right now, I don’t care. I just got done with fighting 45 minutes or one hour ago, whatever it was. 25 hard minutes with a tough dude. I don’t really care what’s going on right now.”
Once the dust from UFC 220 settles, we’ll have to see if anyone changes their tune.
