Alabama has officially announced the hiring of former graduate assistant Derrick Ansley as the Crimson Tide’s new defensive backs coach, according to an official statement from head coach Nick Saban.
“We are very happy to have Derrick and his family back at Alabama,” Saban said in the statement. “Derrick did an outstanding job when he was with us as a graduate assistant, and he has a very good understanding of how we run our program and what is expected. He is a bright young coach, and he will be a great addition working with the defensive backs. We also believe he will be a tremendous asset to our staff in the recruiting process.”
Ansley was a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2010 and 2011 before moving on to Tennessee, where he served as the defensive backs coach for a year under Derek Dooley before spending the last three seasons at Kentucky. With the Wildcats, Ansley served two years as the cornerbacks coach and was in charge of the secondary last season. Prior to being hired at Alabama, he had been promoted to co-defensive coordinator.
Ansley replaces Mel Tucker, who left with former defensive coordinator and new Georgia head coach Kirby Smart to become the Bulldogs’ defensive coordinator.
Needless to say, with his coaching prowess and relationship with Saban, look for Ansley to be a big help for Alabama as the Crimson Tide look to repeat as national champions next season.
