Everyone was struggling to comprehend the news regarding UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor on Tuesday, after the mixed martial arts star abruptly “announced his retirement” on Twitter.
Hours later, McGregor was removed from this summer’s UFC 200 headliner.
So what is actually going on with the brightest star on the UFC roster? UFC president Dana White has said that McGregor was pulled from the bout after refusing to do media obligations. White added that he believes McGregor will fight again.
However, according to one of the closest people to Conor McGregor, his father, the Irish sensation is really retired… for now.
“The last word we heard is he’s retired.,” Tony McGregor told the Independent.ie. “That’s the latest word. The news broke to us at the same time as everyone else. We have spoken but we can’t disclose anything. All his social media followers are in the same boat (seeking clarification). Everybody wants to know.
“He’s in Iceland. Go and talk to him.”
Fair enough.
There has been plenty of speculation about why McGregor was actually at odds with the UFC and why he went about the situation the way he did, but perhaps we will never get the full truth.
Regardless of what happens, we can all thank McGregor for the insane amounts of entertainment he provided in such a short time.
